Greater Things Ahead

Life has been kind of an interesting roller coaster lately. I don’t know if you have ever experienced a day, a week, or even a month where you feel like nothing is running smoothly. Maybe you are having buttery fingers dropping everything, you are fighting with someone you love, you are running late to work, Starbucks ran out of your favorite muffin, or you spilled your fresh cup of coffee all over you at work. 

Each mishappening leads to another, and in the end, all you want to do is just stick your face in your palms and hide away from the world. You wait and pause for just one brief moment of silence, peace, and tranquility, but you know something else is coming. You can almost sense it. It is like you are bracing yourself for even more chaos to come.  

For me, life has just been chaotic. The past couple of weeks have felt like nothing has gone smoothly. I’ve been the one who has the buttery fingers dropping everything, fighting with someone I love, and running late to work. Luckily, it hasn’t yet gotten to me heading to my favorite coffee shop and not being able to get my favorite baked goods or spilling my coffee all over myself. 

Some days we feel like we just can’t catch a break! We are drained spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and even physically! The roads have become narrow and our sight has become limited. We feel like we are walking blindly expecting anything at this point to happen - good or bad. 

Sunday, when I went to church though, I felt God moving in my spirit. I felt like God was not only speaking to me but also to my fiance and my future father in law. We were all struggling with different things that were personal to us - job struggles, relationship struggles, financial struggles, etc. We were just coming to God with empty hands but also with an open heart. The pastor was sharing a message that resounded to all of us that day. He shared about how we need to continue chasing after God, trust Him in the trials and tribulations, and keep our eyes on the Promise Keeper of life. Though sometimes it feels like life is upside down and a hot mess, we need to continue trusting in God and His promises that He has in store for us.  

At the end of the sermon, both me and my future father-in-law were crying. We felt the struggles because the struggles were real. We felt the need to ask God for help in our daily lives and in our daily relationship and walk with Him.  

I left church on Sunday feeling more filled and brighter. Tuesday rolled around, and while walking on my lunch break, a young lady approached me saying, “Excuse me, miss? Would you like some flowers?” I turned around to see her speaking to me and running across the street to hand me a small bouquet of flowers. I was shocked. Me? Receive flowers? Just randomly? That never happens, I thought. 

I responded, “Yes, absolutely! Thank you very much! That is very kind of you!” 

She was smiling from ear to ear as she walked back across the street to the other lady who was also holding some flowers and smiling. As I walked back to the office building, I looked down at the beautiful flowers I was handed. The flowers had a card attached to it that read, “God is preparing you for greater things - not by my strength but His (Zechariah 4:6).” 

I stood in the parking lot, paused, and smiled. “Holy cow! If that ain’t God talking to me”, I said out loud to myself. Life had been so upside down and filled with happy moments but also crazy moments where I questioned whether God was still looking out for me and my fiance. When I received those flowers with that message, I couldn’t help but start to tear up yet smile at the fact that God was watching over me and my fiance, protecting us, and making a way for us when there seemed to be no way. God had us covered, and He was telling me specifically that day that greater things were ahead. I just needed to be patient, wait, and trust in Him. 

If you are like me today, and you find it hard to trust in Him and believe that He has greater things in store for you, read Zechariah 4:6. Read the disciples’ stories. He takes broken stories and turns them into beautiful masterpieces of artwork for His glory. He takes upside down and crazy days and turns them into testimonies to share with others so they can come to learn about Christ too. 

In the end, I know that God has my back, and I know that He has your back as well. He doesn’t abandon us or leave us on the side of the road. He is right next to us and alongside us walking with us in our faith journeys. We can’t do this life alone, and we surely can’t manage our life with our own strength either. We have to be yoked with God and allow him to lead us to those greater things ahead. As we walk this journey called life with God, let us continue to trust in Him, walk with Him, and allow Him to lead us to those greater things He has in store for us.
